The Kentucky division of the Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association represents more than 6,000 owners and trainers who race at Kentucky's five Thoroughbred tracks. We negotiate among the most favorable contracts for horsemen in the country, provide benevolence, educational and recreational programs for backside workers and are a leading advocate for horsemen's rights.

Idiomatic, last year's champion older filly, made a successful return to racing in winning Churchill Downs' Grade 1 LaTroienne on the Kentucky Oaks undercard. We talk with Garrett O'Rourke, who runs owner-breeder Juddmonte's American operation and trainer Brad Cox.
We catch up with trainer Kenny McPeek the morning after he won the $1.25 million, G1 Kentucky Oaks for the first time after three seconds, getting the job done with Thorpedo Anna and jockey Brian Hernandez. McPeek had said earlier in the week that his competition better bring "a bear because I'm bringing a gorilla."
Many horses trained earlier, but Fierceness and Resilience were among the Kentucky Derby horses that trained during the special 7:30 time reserved for Kentucky Oaks and Derby horses.
Horses and hoops: We run into the University of Louisville's women's basketball coach Jeff Walz on the Churchill Downs backstretch the Wednesday of Derby Week. Coach Walz talks about the Derby as a recruiting tool.
U of L's new men's basketball coach Pat Kelsey was at Churchill Downs for the first time (not counting a tour he had when he first came to town) as part of the backstretch throng watching the Kentucky Derby and Oaks horses train Wednesday morning. "Just to be feel the energy on the backside of the track, this almost city within the city is just so special," he said. "I mean, I meant D. Wayne Lukas. How cool was that?"
We speak with the Louisville-area owners into Kentucky Oaks contender Into Champagne, including Mike and Kathy Davis of Mt. Washington, who are on quite the ride with the first foray into racehorse ownership. Other owners speaking on the video include Jim Gladden, Randy Bloch and Jack Porter. We talked right outside trainer Ian Wilkes barn. And thanks to Equibase, we now know that Into Champagne was one of only 1,376 horses that won their career debuts in 2023 out of 13,153 U.S. horses who ran for the first time last year. Owner Harry Veruchi got the bargain of Kentucky Derby 150 when he paid $11,000 for West Saratoga, with the then-yearling picked out and bid on by trainer Larry Demeritte. Veruchi talks about being in the Derby and Demeritte as a horseman.

We are sorry to hear of the passing of veteran Kentucky horseman Ernie Retamoza Sr., who died Tuesday. The eulogy will be held at approximately 11:30 in Duncan Memorial Chapel, where Ernie and Janie Retamoza were married, 5600 Old Floydsburg Road, Crestwood, KY 40014. A graveside service will follow in the attached Floydsburg Cemetery. Ernie, a former jockey, died Tuesday at age 80.
