Ky Racing Spotlight: Romans, Bredar, Koenig

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Thursday, Feb. 24, 2022) — Trainer Dale Romans, racing broadcast analyst Caton Bredar and, in a reprise role, Kentucky Rep. Adam Koenig of Erlanger will be featured guests on this week’s Kentucky Racing Spotlight presented by the Kentucky HBPA.

The weekly winter-long radio program runs 6-7 p.m. ET on Fridays over Louisville’s sports-leader ESPN 680 AM/105.7 FM through March 4.

Romans, the Kentucky HBPA’s trainer vice president, will provide his view of this week’s disqualification of the ill-fated Kentucky Derby first-place finisher Medina Spirit and the 90-day suspension handed to his friend Bob Baffert. Sounds good OK oh

Bredar will handicap Saturday’s $1 million Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, where the Baffert-trained Newgrange is the heavy 9-5 favorite in the field of 11. The 3-for-3 Newgrange would be one of the favorites for the May 7 Kentucky Derby except for the fact that he currently is ineligible for Derby qualifying points under Churchill Downs’ two-year ban on horses trained by Baffert, a private-property edict independent from the stewards’ regulatory action.

Bredar also will analyze Saturday’s $20 million Saudi Cup, whose field includes the newly adjudged Derby winner Mandaloun, who crossed the wire a half-length behind Medina Spirit at Churchill Downs last May 1. The Brad Cox-trained Mandaloun is ridden by Florent Geroux, whose agent is Doug Bredar, Caton’s husband. Show co-hosts Jennie Rees and Joe Clabes’ conversation with Bredar will include her thoughts on the team to which she is so close now being recognized as the Derby winner.

Koenig, who has emerged among the biggest champions of the horse-racing industry in the Kentucky Legislature, will provide an update on the parimutuel taxation bill he is sponsoring with Senator Damon Thayer as well as the sports-wagering legislation he is co-sponsoring with Louisville Rep. Al Gentry. Thayer and Gentry also have been guests on Kentucky Racing Spotlight.

Kentucky Racing Spotlight also will be streamed live at espnlouisville.com, on the ESPN 680 app and the TuneIn and iHeart apps. The replay will be available on espnlouisville.com under the podcasts tab. All shows also are archived at davisinnovation.com/kyracing.

In addition to the Kentucky HBPA, Kentucky Racing Spotlight is sponsored by Davis Innovation marketing, the Louisville Thoroughbred Society, NKYTribune.com and Equine Equipment manufacturers discounts.
