Breeders’ Cup champion Ethical Diamond to return stateside for G2 Kentucky Turf Cup
FRANKLIN, KY (August 11, 2026) – The Grade 2, $2 million Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational is already getting a taste of international flavor, as reigning Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Ethical Diamond is slated to come stateside for the 1 ½-mile event at Kentucky Downs.
The Kentucky Turf Cup is a Breeders’ Cup “Win And You’re In” qualifying event for this year’s Grade 1, $5 million Breeders’ Cup Turf on October 31 at Keeneland. The Kentucky Turf Cup is also one of a dozen stakes events carded for the U.S. Open of Turf Championships, which features $18 million in purses across a dozen stakes from Saturday-Monday of Labor Day weekend.
H O S Syndicate’s Irish-bred Ethical Diamond was an upset 27-1 winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar, earning a 107 Beyer Speed Figure when defeating two-time Breeders’ Cup champion Rebel’s Romance by 1 ¼ lengths for trainer Willie Mullins. The 6-year-old son of Awtaad will arrive at his next North American endeavor from a victory in the Group 3 Ballyroan on August 6 at Leopardstown, defeating Group 2-winner Green Impact by a nose. Prior to this effort, Ethical Diamond was unplaced at Group level in two starts this year.
“We are happy to be a contender in the Kentucky Turf Cup,” Mullins said. “He has come out of his win at Leopardstown in good order.”
The Kentucky Turf Cup will mark a long awaited return to Kentucky Downs for Mullins, whose father Paddy Mullins saddled Grabel to a victory in the 1990 Dueling Grounds International Hurdle.
“I am looking forward to visiting Kentucky Downs again,” Mullins said. “The last time I was there was the opening of the racetrack, then known as the Dueling Grounds, when my father trained a winner there.”
Bred by Mr. W. J. Kennedy, Ethical Diamond has banked earnings in excess of $3.3 million through a record of 18-6-1-1.

Burnham Square targets G2 Kentucky Downs Turf Cup following G1 Arlington Million score

Whitham Thoroughbreds’ Burnham Square is confirmed for the Grade 2, $2 million Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational on September 5 at Kentucky Downs after a triumph in the Grade 1 Arlington Million on August 1 at Colonial Downs.
Contested at 1 ½ miles, the Kentucky Turf Cup is a Breeders’ Cup “Win And You’re In” qualifier, offering the winner an automatic entry into the Grade 1, $5 million Breeders’ Cup Turf on October 31 at Keeneland.
Trained by Ian Wilkes, Burnham Square secured his fourth straight triumph this year when taking the prestigious turf event by a half-length under regular rider Brian Hernandez, Jr.
The 4-year-old Liam’s Map gelding entered the Arlington Million from a trio of impressive stakes scores going three turns on grass, including a career-high 107 Beyer Speed Figure in the Grade 2 Elkhorn in April at Keeneland, which he won by an astounding 9 ¾ lengths. He followed with wins in the Grade 3 Louisville on May 16 and Chorleywood on June 13 – both at Churchill Downs.
Burnham Square has recorded a 5-4-1-0 record this year with his lone defeat taking place in his 2026 debut in a Gulfstream Park allowance going 1 1/16 miles on the turf.
“This race has always been on our radar,” Wilkes said of the Kentucky Turf Cup. “We set out his schedule earlier in the year and fortunately the plan has come together. To win the Arlington Million was very satisfying. It’s such a prestigious race, and it’s been around for a while. There’s just an aura about that race and to win it is just tremendous.”
Burnham Square is a Kentucky homebred out of the Graded stakes-winning Scat Daddy mare Linda, who captured the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere over the Churchill Downs turf. But despite his turf-heavy pedigree, Burnham Square raced on dirt during his juvenile and sophomore campaigns. His accomplishments over the main track include victories in the Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park and the Grade 1 Blue Grass at Keeneland en route to a sixth place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby behind eventual 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty.
“He’s bred for grass, but he was just doing too well on dirt at the time that I couldn’t put him on turf,” Wilkes said. “He went on, broke his maiden, won the Holy Bull, so it was hard to go back to training him on the grass when he did well on the dirt.”
Burnham Square is a spotless 2-for-2 when racing at the 1 ½-mile distance. The race will also mark a return to the Franklin, Kentucky turf course for Burnham Square, who made his debut on grass in last year’s Grade 3 Nashville Derby and finished a head behind European invader Wimbledon Hawkeye.
“The horse does not get tired, and he’s got a great turn of foot at the end of a race,” Wilkes said. “There are certain horses that run well at Kentucky Downs, so that’s definitely an added asset for us.”
Burnham Square boasts an overall record of 15-7-4-1, which includes a total of five Graded conquests and over $2.8 million in earnings.

Lynch eyeing G2 Nashville Derby for Fancy Sailor

Following a triumphant stakes debut in the Water Tower on August 2 at Ellis Park, Fancy Sailor will stretch out in distance for the Grade 2, $3 million Nashville Derby Invitational going 1 5/16 miles on September 5 at Kentucky Downs, according to trainer Brian Lynch.
Owned and bred by Raroma Stable, Fancy Sailor tracked a close third along the inside down the backstretch of the Water Tower, before angling several paths to the outside and in the clear nearing the far turn. He took command inside the final furlong while fending off a late rally from Royal Causeway to win the nine-furlong Water Tower by one length. The victory garnered a career-best 83 Beyer Speed Figure.
Fancy Sailor, by Justify, is out of the Hard Spun mare Tiz Ro, who is a half-sister to 2007 Grade1 Arlington Million winner Jambalaya.
“He’s by Justify so I think he’ll love the distance. The mare could run all day and I trained her as well,” said Lynch. “He’s got a lovely female family and he’s by the right horse when you get them over that sort of ground. We hope every year you can come with a 3-year-old that can hopefully get over these sorts of distances, so we’re thrilled to have him rounded into his current form.”
Fancy Sailor is a three-time winner of five lifetime starts, with his lone off-the-board effort being a troubled sixth in a first-level allowance optional claiming race on May 8 at Churchill Downs. Piloted by Brian Hernandez, Jr., Fancy Sailor tracked to the rear of the field early on before bumping with a pair of rivals in upper stretch finishing six lengths behind the winner and next-out Graded stakes winner West End Kid.
“He got in a bad traffic situation that day and never had a chance,” Lynch recalled. “Brian said to me after the race ‘I’d love to ride this horse back, he gives me a great feel’. Since then, Brian’s made all the right moves on him.”
The Nashville Derby will be one of five stakes races held on Saturday, September 5, all worth at least $1.5 million in purse money. Also scheduled on the program are a pair of Breeders’ Cup “Win And You’re In” qualifiers–the Grade 2, $2 million Kentucky Downs Turf Cup Invitational (BC Turf), and the Grade 2, $1.75 million Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint (BC Turf Sprint)–as well as the Grade 2, $1.5 million Music City, and the Grade 2, $1.5 million Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf.

Brilliant Berti taking another chance at G3 Mint Millions
Klein Racing’s Kentucky homebred Brilliant Berti is targeting a return to Kentucky Downs for the Grade 3, $2.5 million Mint Millions Invitational on September 7. The 5-year-old turf specialist looks to improve on his closing fourth-place finish in last year’s edition.
Trained by Cherie DeVaux, the Noble Mission horse recently returned to top form with a dominant, 1 ¾-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile Green River Island at Ellis Park, registering a stellar 95 Beyer Speed Figure. The performance marked his first trip to the winner’s circle since capturing last season’s Grade 2 Wise Dan at Churchill Downs—his final prep race before contesting last summer’s Mint Millions.
“He came out of the race in really good order, it should set him up really well for the Mint Millions. It was a good race for him to get his confidence back,” DeVaux said.
Brilliant Berti made his debut at Kentucky Downs his 3-year-old season, when he captured the one-mile Gun Runner one month before his first Graded win in the Grade 3 Bryan Station at Keeneland. A consistent eight-time winner of 18 career starts, Brilliant Berti has banked over $2.6 million in earnings with six stakes victories.
